July 07 Pictures
The photos below, taken by a resident (Gordon
Grant), show conditions at the Southern end of the village which was worst
affected by the floods with two houses inundated. The July flooding turned out
to be more serious than the January events, compounded by run off from the rain
sodden surrounding farmland and overflow from the neighbouring County Brook.

Hydrology
A meeting of the ad hoc MM historical
society took place at the spotted Cow on Monday evening (30/07/07) when Owen
Humphrys gave an interesting and topical talk on the Hydrology of the Upper
Thames with particular reference to its effects on Marston Meysey. Using old
maps Owen traced the rivers and streams that were flowing in and around the
parish, it was of interest to see on the 1875 OS map that many areas were marked
"liable to flooding". All these rivers flow down into the infant Thames.
Discussion followed on the part played
by run off from the Fairford airbase in the recent flooding in the village, plus
the effect of the gravel extraction operations to the south of the village on
the drainage channels. There was much speculation on what was described as a
surge of water in the late afternoon of the 21st originating on the base, was
this due to the base authorities releasing water from storage facilities on the
airfield ?
